Writing Academic Papers for Law School

Academic legal writing is different from regular, or practitioner, legal writing. This guide was created as a resource to help law students learn the nuances of academic writing and to assist with their Substantial Writing and other papers for law school

Welcome!

This research guide is to help you with academic papers that you need to write for your law school courses, including but not limited to your substantial writing paper. Academic papers are ones where you have to argue a thesis and use footnotes with other sources to support your thesis. Papers that are reflections would not be considered academic papers.

Each tab on the left will help you with different portions of writing a type of academic paper like this.

As always, if you need further help, don't hesitate to contact one of the law librarians!
