The DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) was first proposed as S. 1291 in 2001. It has since been reintroduced several times, as recently as 2011, but has yet to be passed into law. In 2011, California introduced and passed it's own version of the act, the California DREAM Act (AB 540). In 2012 President Barack Obama's administration announced its intention to cease deporting young undocumented people meeting criteria previously outlined in the DREAM Act.
